Margaret Hackett-Cassar (SA) writes to Australia Post re Australia-Israel joint issue stamps 29Jun13 June 30, 2013

I am writing to complain about a recent issue of stamps. These stamps were jointly issued by Australia Post and Israel Post and are meant to commemorate the Australian Light Horse and the WWI Battle of Beersheba in Palestine. However Australia Post falsely describes this batttle as being fought to aid the establishment of the state of Israel.

This is a disgraceful re-writing of history. Australia Post has been duped into supporting Israel’s attempt to whitewash its crimes against humanity. Surely Australia Post has historians who check the accuracy of the information they put on their stamps. This kind of sloppy checking of historical facts and craven desire to please the Israeli government is making Australia Post a complete laughing stock as this story is travelling fast through social media sites.

How can the stamps’ description on the Australia Post shop site conflate the joint Australian-Palestinian battle at Beersheba with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948? Australians and Palestinians fought and died in that war for a patriotic sense of duty to the British empire and to defend Palestine against the Turks. They did NOT fight for the establishment of an apartheid state which has caused untold suffering for millions of Palestinians.Your organization has shown great disrespect to the memory of our soldiers and a blatant disregard for the truth in this matter. I request that you withdraw these stamps from circulation.”
