The Australian: “Gender not frontline issue in Israel” by John Lyons, 25 September 2009
Friday’s front-page piece titled “Gender not frontline issue in Israel” is a clear case of misplaced attention to gender issues when focus should be on the plight of Palestinian women suffering physical, psychological and economic violence and insecurities as a result of Israeli occupation practices.
The cause of justice and peace for these two peoples would be best served by not putting a human face on an oppressive Israeli military machine, but rather by showcasing conscientious Israeli women, like the women of ‘machsomwatch’, who choose to be on the other side of the fence protecting Palestinian villagers from settler violence, helping Palestinian women pass through military checkpoints and escorting Palestinian schoolchildren to their schools.
