A letter from Anna Baltzer on her Daily Show appearance with Mustapha Barghouti October 30, 2009

FULL UNCUT VIDEO:
Part I
Part II
Dear friends,
Last night Dr. Barghouti and I were on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart talking about Palestine.
The show was overwhelmed with angry emails and phone calls prior to the appearance, and up until the last minute it seemed like they might cancel. During the taping the show had it’s only heckler in 11 years. The entire staff were very nervous and may come to regret the monumental decision (and not make it again) as they will surely be inundated now that the show has aired.
That is why it is CRUCIAL that the show receive letters of support from anyone who appreciated the interview.
PLEASE take a moment to give a quick thank you to the Daily Show. I’m sure they will likely be affected by numbers rather than length, so it’s OK to make it short, but spread the word to others! Be sure to put “Thank you” in the subject, and maybe Dr. Barghouti & my names. Fill out the form here.
(make sure to choose The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as your topic). You can also try calling 212-468-1700.
Many of you who watched the show on TV noticed that everything of real substance that I said was edited out. The major issues cut out were:
(1) the US role in aiding Israel,
(2) the lack of adequate coverage in mainstream US media, and
(3) the Palestinian-led movement for Boycott/Divestment/Sanctions (BDS)
to nonviolently pressure Israel to comply with international law.
The full, un-cut interview is available on the Daily Show homepage and will eventually be moved to:
It’s worth watching and comparing with what they allowed said in the TV version.
Regardless of the cuts, this was a huge step for the movement (and Dr. Barghouti’s left-in parts were excellent, in my opinion). If you agree, do make your letters positive, even if you decide to mention the disappointing discrepancy between the full interview and what was aired. Again, please take a moment to fill out the form here. (Make sure to choose The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as your topic).
I believe the interview wouldn’t have happened 3 years ago. Times are changing. Keep on keepin’ on…
Anna
PS. I launched a new version of my website in time for the show, in case you’re interested.

We have had 6 decades of always taking the Israeli side. And someone has the temerity to give airtime to the other side of the argument after 60 years and that is wrong?
Long Live Israel. But not at the expense of her neighbors. How many more UN resolutions will you ignore, Israeli government? You ask your neighbors to be civil, and yet you are Goliath and they are David with your 21st century warfare machine and their bottle rockets and dynamite. Both sides should stand down from violence and show that they want what is best for their people. Peace.
KUDOS to Jon Stewart for giving airtime to a side that the mainstream media has ignored forever. Do we think we can have peace and stability by allowing only one side legitimacy? Those of us that want peace and stability know this is impossible.
Enough. That paradigm has failed. Utterly. Heartfelt Thanks to Jon Stewart, et al. For having the guts to do what is right in the face of overwhelming pressure to do otherwise.
We all want the same things. ALL of us. A roof over our heads, food on the table, our families happy and loooong vacations with the people we love.
Let us get there.
Peace Salaam Shalom,
Matt
Thank you for your courage in airing this show. It is so important for Americans to hear about the plight of the Palestinians and your show will help to turn the tide, which is well on its way, toward justice for the Palestinians and a healthier and saner world. Jon Stewart, you and Amy and a few others are the true heroes in today’s world.
Thank you for finally having the courage attempt to show the oppressed side.
Sent to the DSWJS:
“Jon Stewart is a mensch, one of the smartest commentators out there and a first-class wit. The Daily Show will remain one of my top favorites – and one of the few I actually care about.
It seems the show just came under attack from groups that show little respect for traditional American values of free expression. That’s too bad – for them.
Keep up the good work!
PD”
I detest how much influence and power the Israeli Lobby (Mafia) has on Amercia. To quote Joe Klein, who is Jewish, Iraq would never have been invaded if it wasn’t for the jewish influence on American politicians.
There is not a word of how Israel is refusing medical supplies to enter the country and have threatened the UN to not release the Goldberg report which will produce evidence Israel committed crimes against humanity. I’m not sure how anyone can look at a holocaust museum today and not think of how Israel has turned into Nazi Germany.
I will write Mr. Stewart and thank him personally.
The producers of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, and the entire staff are to be commended for their effort and success in bringing critical, timely, relevant, and thought provoking content to an otherwise intellectually flaccid genre whose mainstream players are sadly incapable of doing so…
Thank you, Jon and the Daily Show writers and staff…
It’s about time we heard of this and it’s about time that we heard the Palestinian side of things as well. My neighbour (yes, I live in Canada so my spelling is different) is from Palestine and he’s one of the most wonderful people you’d want to meet. He grew up in a refugee camp and is thrilled he can bring his daughter up in peace and prosperity in Canada. His mother visited during the summer of 2008 and was amazed that we didn’t have armed soldiers in the streets or gunfire and other noise from fighting on a regular basis.
We need more of this, not less. I applaud your courage!! All of you!! Well done and keep up the good work. It’s still puzzling to me that a comedy show has the best news coverage of any American station. You all rock!!
Peace and love,
Deb
I would like to thank John Stewart for having the courage to open the debate for a non-violent solution to be the conflict and occupation in Palestine. You have the support of my family and friends in Buffalo.
p.s john besides having big balls, you are goddamn funny, comedy is the cutting edge of truth, stay at it.
Jon Stewart has done us a favor. There is another side to the Israeli/Palestinian crisis that is rarely heard. Inundated as we are by a single side of this issue, that of Israel can do no wrong, the Daily show has been courageous enough to show the other side of the story. To those who criticize him for allowing that other opinion to be aired, where are you when the shoe is on the other foot? Do you lobby for the inclusion of the Palestinian point of view or do you revel in your near-monopoly in the media? Clearly both sides have salient points and committed egregious wrongs. We need to hear both sides presented in a reasonable fashion. Thank you Jon Stewart and everyone at the Daily Show.
be brave, have the courage to not be silenced as so much of the press is in this country.i know your not a “news” show.
to get critical news about israel you have to read haaretz, otherwise you have to endure THIS
Thank you for airing this interview. It was excellent. I am shocked by critics who are apparently frightened when anyone mentions the word peace.
carry on, guys!
Well I see freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. Great shows ,Thank You
As a progressive Jew, I’m disgusted by how the Israeli right has essentially threatened our American mainstream media into adopting its dangerous POV as the only authentic Israeli attitude. It’s no different than when “anti-Commie” witch-hunter Senator Joe McCarthy claiming to speak for all Americans in the 1950s. The warlike bully claims to represent everyone, progressive voices are left out… and war continues.
DSmith (above), please don’t generalize – there are tons of progressive Jews who are as disgusted as you are by the “Israeli mafia,” but remember that it only represents one side of us.
I think it’s damned obvious that the Israeli right is doing everything it can to *encourage* Palestinian extremists to get violent, to *empower* Hamas against Fatah – because as long as they can claim it’s a security risk, they feel they won’t have to give back the occupied territories. So let’s create a security risk, huh?
Sensible Jews are as repulsed by this as anyone.
I am so sick and tired of these right wing Israeli shills and warmongers who cry holocaust any time they are exposed for what they are. Some day the American people will tire of these liars and stop supporting this evil state. I’m not a racist but I have to tell you the Israeli’s are giving Jewish people a bad name.
Jon and Company…you are even more favorite after your display of courage. If Israelis and Zionist Americans want Israel to survive like I do it is time to honestly face xenophobic excesses and leave victimization behind…both being the perpetual victim and creating more of them. Israel can never be “a light to the nations” with present cruelty to stangers and neighbors alike. And our heroes Anna and Mustafa were spot on. Strength to all of you as the mass movement builds.
Courage,
Tom G
Perhaps Mr. Stewart is the person who is allowing us to join the rest of the world (and global media) so that real facts become available to the sheltered American public. Now, if other news channels will follow, we can have an honest discussion in this country. The astonishing amount of money and effort diverted to censoring the reality of the Middle East for Americans could be spent to much better use in trying to SOLVE these problems, create a one-state or two-state solution, move the borders back to the pre-war boundaries, give Palestinians access to water, take down the apartheid wall, and make Jerusalem an international city supervised by the UN. It’s pretty simple – once the fog machine is rolled away. Thank-you, Jon. You broke the artificial dyke.
Anna, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama love you! Thank you for bringing this issue to the media.
As a Jewish viewer in London, I applaud Jon Stewart for allowing the courageous and truthful voices of Anna Baltzer and Mustafa Bargouthi to be heard. For far too long have anodyne and glib excuses been made for Israel’s continuing acts of illegal repression and violence towards the occupied Palestinians. For far too long have mainstream media been content with distorted versions of what is happening on a daily basis.
My message to Anna Baltzer http://digs.by/fy8
The Daily Show is criticized for airing the Barghouti/Baltzer segment on the grounds that “you didn’t give the other side.” But The Daily Show has no obligation to “the public interest” any more than Fox News does. It is free to present what it chooses. Those who disagree are free to present their side. Such a presentation would be valid criticism of the Barghouti/Baltzer segment would be legitimage and welcome. But to criticize simply the show simply because it didn’t say what the critics would like to have said is bogus. It’s up to them to make their own case.
I say the Daily Show did give time to “the other side”: the guests vs the berserker audience heckler. Mr. Heckler recreated the “feel” of Likudniks arguing belligerently with critics, like Alan Dershowitz vs Norman Finkelstein on Democracy Now.
I FIRMLY applaud the courage of Jon Stewart and Comedy Central for taking this on, when they did not have to, for setting a precedent (ONCE AGAIN) as a bold satirical NEWS outlet, like The Onion but with Truth.
Thanks for not playing it safe. Bless Rachel Corrie too, the play honoring her memory was suppressed by the Likudnik-Zionist activists. Their rabid defensiveness, to even mild critiques, tells a huge story.
The only upsetting thing here is that a comedy show remains one of the only honest voices in American media. Stewart and the Daily Show have done excellent work in bringing relevant issues to a wider audience, and I believe Jon Stewart continuously comes off as the least-biased interviewer in any media outlet. Kudos, again, for comedians having more courage than many journalists.
I am sorry to have missed the program. I want to thank the Daily Show and Jon Stewart for the courage to say what needs to be said.
“Real” journalists have not presented a balanced view of this issue…it’s 60+ years old!!! We have to “solve” the problem of Israeli occupation. Yes, Jews needed a homeland…I would never minimize that but establishing freedom and safety for one group at the others’ expense diminishes us all.
Go Jon!!
Thank you so much for your courage. Keep it up. Only with justice and two fair states can Israel remain a true Jewish democratic homeland. Peace!
